English 104, Spring 2005

Donna Parish

Required Textbook: The Bedford Guide for College Writers, Seventh Edition

Course Description: The student will complete four papers which are at least 500 words and at least C quality. Failure to complete these four papers with the standards set out by the instructor will result in an F for English 104. Several other shorter papers, various assignments and quizzes, and a portfolio will also be required. The portfolio will consist of a journal, a vocabulary list of 100 words, a list of personal grammatical, spelling, and punctuation errors, and rough drafts and essays.

Course Objectives:  http://www.missouriwestern.edu/eflj/eng104.asp - Objectives

The keys to good writing are Read, Read, Read, and Write, Write, Write, and Observe, Observe, Observe, and Listen, Listen, Listen.

Class Policies:

  1. Be on time.
  2. Talk when it is your turn.
  3. Bring the appropriate materials to class and participate in class activities.
  4. Failure to turn in an assignment on time will result in a loss of ½ of the points. If an absence is unavoidable, leave your assignment in my mailbox in the English office or e-mail it to dparish@missouriwestern.edu or dparish@highlandusd.k12.ks.us. Call me (785-442-3837) or e-mail to find out assignments missed. I do not check e-mail on weekends. If it’s due the next class period, it is due!
  5. Extended hospital stays or the death of a close friend or relative are about the only excuses for late work with no grade penalty.
  6. Cheating will result in a zero on that assignment. A second instance of cheating will result in failure for the class and will be reported to the university.
  7. Keep all papers with a grade on them.
  8. I will take roll at the beginning of class. I will do nothing with this record unless there is a grade appeal.
  9. Grading Scale: A    90-100%;    B    80-89%;   C    70-79%;    D    60-69%               F    59.4 or below.
  10. We will do extensive writing in class. If you are absent, it will be very difficult to make these up since I am an adjunct instructor.
  11. Reminder: Missouri Western policy says you must earn at least a C in English 104 to move on to English 108.
