Welcome, as you begin your college education and
preparing for your future. College is
one of life’s grandest adventures, both challenging and demanding. English 100 will help you achieve the goals
you have set for yourself. The Syllabus
provides you guidelines for your English studies. Throughout the semester, please contact me whenever you have questions
or problems. I am here to teach, coach
and help you achieve during your freshman year at Missouri Western State
University.

must read and review the following, in the text, pp. V-X

* You
will discover the reading and writing strategies that work
best
for you.

Writing and reading are, absolutely, linked skills.

English 100 is designed for YOU and will enable you to succeed
in
college. You will grow as a reader and
a writer!

Course outline:
English One is all about developing
college-level writing skills.
* The
skills you will achieve:
+ Read actively for greater
understanding.
+ Improve writing and reading skills
by drawing ideas and
information from written materials.
+ Use texts to understand your own and
others’ experiences.
+ Recognize good writing by actively
reading good prose.
+ Move easily from writing for
self-expression to writing for
readers.
+ Write at great length more easily,
quickly and usefully.
+ Develop ideas and concepts with
specific details, examples
and paragraphs.
+ Use effective planning, creativity,
revision, editing to
complete
writing tasks.
+ Think critically and reason
analytically.
Grading policy:
(English
One students must attain a “C”, or better, grade to
pass
and enter English 104.)
*
English One course work will include individual study, group
study
and discussion.
* Unit
assignment sheets will be provided and students need to
keep up
with the course work.
* You
will submit a portfolio of your semester’s writing
assignments.
*
English 100 requires each student to follow all steps in the
writing
process as they develop and complete writing projects.
* You
will have two individual conferences with the instructor to
review
your writing progress.
* You
will attend, throughout the semester, a once-a-week, small
group
Writer’s Workshop.

* There
are four major writing units and assignments.
You must
turn in
completed work on all four assignments or you will not
pass
the course, this semester.
Writing Units:
(You will receive detailed Unit assignment sheets.
Each Unit will include readings, vocabulary study, group activities and the
writing process.)
* Unit One:
The Memoir
Writing
a narrative essay about an experience in your life that
has had
a significant effect on you. This
experience has changed
you and
your beliefs in some important way.
* Unit Two:
The Mentor
Writing
an explanatory essay about a person who has influenced
you and
your life. You should know the person well and be able to
explain
her/his characteristics and qualities.
* Unit Three: The Debater
Writing
an argument essay which addresses a serious issue or
problem,
which you support by citing materials you have read.
* Unit Four: The Lesson
Through
reflection, you will address a topic you have already
in English 100 or another college course.
This assignment will
demand
a high level of critical thinking, reading and writing.
* Writing Portfolio
The
Portfolio will include your assessment of your writing progress and goals you set for your success.
