REQUIRED TEXT: McMahan, Elizabeth, et al. Literature and the
Writing Process. Sixth ed.
College Writing and Research fulfills the
students' General Studies composition requirement. The prerequisite
for ENG 108 is a grade of C or higher in ENG
104.
COURSE OBJECTIVES: English course objectives, goals, and sample papers
are available at
http://www.missouriwestern.edu/eflj/genstud.asp. See
Web listing at
http://www.missouriwestern.edu/eflj/eng108.asp
for the list
of objectives and institutional competencies for this General Studies
course.
ATTENDANCE: Attendance is strongly recommended for success in
this course. You will receive a grade
for attendance figured in with other grades.
Since this course meets just once a week, missing 3 periods or parts of
class time equaling 3 times will result in a
failing grade for the entire semester.
HONESTY: Each student is expected to do his or her own work. If you violate
this guide, you will receive
a failing grade on the assignment, possibly
leading to a failure in the course. We will go over plagiarism
in class.
STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES: Any student enrolled in this course who has a disability
which prevents
or hinders the completion of class
requirements as stated, should notify me immediately. I will ask to see
documents on the nature of the disability.
ACADEMIC POLICIES: All assigned work is to be handed in at the
beginning of the class period. Promptness
is a must. There will be NO make-up
opportunities for missed in class writing assignments or quizzes. So, again,
attendance is a must. When a final draft of a
paper is late, there will be an entire grade deduction for the late
paper. The paper will be considered late even
if you are absent. All final copies of papers must be
word-processed. Double space, put your name
in the upper right hand corner with a page number for every
page after one.
PORTFOLIO: Every student must keep a complete portfolio of all
work done in this class.
BASIC REQUIREMENTS FOR ENG 108
Students will engage in exploratory journal
writing and pre-writing exercises in which they will
learn how to analyze, synthesize, and
evaluate the thinking of others in order to discover, develop, and test
their own ideas and points of view. Students
will complete 5-6 writing assignments in ENG 108. Three of these
assignments will require research for which
students will submit all notes and pre-writing exercises, and two
or three shorter papers.
GRADING POLICIES:
Grades will be figured on a point basis
totaled throughout the semester.
90/100 = A
80/89 = B
70/79 = C
60/69 = D
