Course description

SPA 211 is an intensive, intermediate-level course for the student interested in learning Spanish in the context of the professions, job market, global economy and the business world. The purpose of SPA 211 is two-fold: on the one hand, we aim to further develop practical language skills; on the other, we will introduce students to the vocabulary and business practices of the Spanish-speaking world. The goal is to help students successfully negotiate in an increasingly global market.

Classes

In order to accomplish course’s objectives classes will develop three main sections throughout the week.

1) The first one involves readings which provide students with the cultural information about the particular topic to be studied, and specific vocabulary.  The main objective of this section is to broaden students’ cultural and lexical resources throughout readings and discussion sessions.

2) The second section involves additional lexical and cultural information about the topic presented but through audio and visual inputs.  In this section, students also will have a “personal insight” section where they will compare, think, and reflect about cultural differences.  This section is called “el rincón del internauta”, where they will be able to access different audios, readings, blogs, videos, etc., to verify and practice their skills.

3) In the third section the emphasis is made on the verbal expression. Throughout special conversation activities students will reinforce their verbal grammar and lexical resources, as well as they will get into cultural aspects of the topics presented throughout the communicative practice.

Grading criteria:

Attendance and Participation in class/

Homework and assignments                                       30%

Quizzes (4)                                                                  30%

Final Project                                                                40%

Participation and Attendance (30%):  This portion of the grade includes your active participation in class and in campus events. In order to receive full credit for participation, you must attend a minimum of three international/cultural events on campus during the fall semester. Examples of events: Spanish Day, Foreign Film Series on campus (dates to be announced), and lectures on Spanish or multicultural themes. You will need to provide written documentation of your attendance. This is a course designed for developing and reinforcing communicative skills, therefore class attendance is mandatory.  Only five unexcused absences will be allowed. After your fifth (5th) absence, two points will be deducted from the final grade for each additional absence. If you are more than 10 minutes late, or you leave before the class is over, you will be considered absent.

You are expected to come to class having already prepared (i.e., read, studied, completed homework) the assigned topics for the day, ready to discuss these, and actively participate in the activities of the class. Participation will be assessed daily and will be available upon request.

Quizzes (30%): will be based on material covered in the textbook, handouts and class activities. There will be 4 quizzes. The quiz with the lowest score will be dropped. However, you must take all five quizzes. Otherwise, you will get a zero (0) on the one you miss, and this grade will not be dropped.

Final project (40%): The final project for this course will consist of creating a new product for a Spanish speaking country or for the Hispanic/Latino community in the U.S.,improving an existing one, or importing one to the United States. This product may also be a service.

  • You will have to do research on several on line and printed materials referring statistics, cultural and social aspects involved in the consumption of the selected product.
  • You will have also to preview production materials, production requirements and costs, and estimated profit.
  • You will need to create a marketing campaign, a slogan for your product, and to describe how, when and where you would advertise it. For example, would you advertise primarily on TV? If so, at what time of day? You will also have to explain what need your product or service fills, and why you think it is valuable.
  • This project includes a written assignment (8%) as well as a 10-minute-oral presentation (12%). The length of the written assignment will not be predetermined, but it should meet the requirements stated above. It has to be double-spaced (hand or typewritten) and it will be given to the instructor on the day of the oral presentation.
  • The student will also provide his/her classmates with a handout containing the main points of the project and new vocabulary words. Visuals are recommended.
  • The presentation is not to be read, although the student may refer to a note card containing key vocabulary words, reminders of main ideas, etc. The presentations should be practiced and well prepared, but not memorized or scripted.  The instructor reserves the right to deny the acceptability of any presentation that is read or scripted, resulting in a 0.
  • In addition to the presentation there will be an additional 5-10 minutes for questions from your classmates and your instructor.

General Administrative Issues

Expected Time Required (Approximate): A general guideline for the amount of time you should plan to dedicate to this and any other University course is 2-3 hours of homework per hour spent in class.

Extra Credit: No extra credit will be given under any circumstances.

Late and Make-up Work: Any activities or assignments missed due to an unexcused absence will receive a grade of 0. No late work will be accepted and no make-ups will be allowed. In the case of excused absences, your instructor will determine how the missed work should best be accounted for.

Disagreements and grade disputes: If you disagree with a grade or have problems in your class, please approach your instructor first and try to solve the disagreement together

Attendance and missed work: In order to improve student learning and retention as well as to achieve compliance with federal financial aid policies, Western has implemented a mandatory attendance policy for students in all 100- and 200-level courses beginning Fall Semester 2007. Instructors are required to monitor and track student attendance. A student will be given an excused absence when acting as an official representative of the university, provided the student gives prior written verification from the faculty/staff supervisor of the event.  Any additional excused absences are at the complete discretion of the instructor.  Maximum allowed, unexcused absences accrued before the reporting of midterm grades, October 17, are: 5. Thus, when you have 6 unexcused absences, you will be reported to the Registrar’s Office, who will automatically withdraw you from this class.  The Financial Aid Office will reduce financial aid as appropriate.

Foreign Language Lab in Murphy 107: You will have open access to the Foreign Language lab, open weekdays only. As in any other lab, you need to sign in when you enter. All the materials necessary for the completion of your workbook/lab activities are on line with Quia.

Assistance: Please do not hesitate to see me during my office hours.  If you can not come during my hours you can also make an appointment with me and send me any administrative question by mail. You can also schedule free tutoring through the Center for Academic Support:  www.missouriwestern.edu/CAS/

Handicapped Policy: Any student in this course who has a disability that prevents the fullest expression of abilities should contact me personally as soon as possible so we can discuss class requirements.

Academic Honesty Policy and Due Process: Academic honesty is required in all academic endeavors.  Violations of academic honesty include any instance of plagiarism, cheating, seeking credit for another’s work, falsifying documents or academic records, or any other fraudulent activity.  Violations of academic honesty may result in a failing grade on the assignment, failure in the course, or expulsion from the University.  When a student’s grade has been affected, violations of academic honesty will be reported to the Provost or designated representative on the Academic Honesty Violation Report forms.

Please see the 2006-07 Student Handbook and Calendar on page 21 for specific activities identified as violations of this policy and the student due process procedure. This handbook is also available online at http://www.missouriwestern.edu/handbook/index.pdf

Cheating or plagiarism is not acceptable.  You will  receive a 0 (zero) for any work that  shows evidence of cheating and/or  plagiarism

Foreign Language Test-Out Procedure: If you have studied French, German, or Spanish in high school or college, and wish to receive credit, or if you are unsure which level of French, German, or Spanish is the best one for you to continue your language studies, take the free placement test offered in your language.  Depending on your results, you may be eligible for 3 to 12 hours of credit.

Placement test dates are scheduled in the weeks prior to pre-registration and during summer registration.  Please consult the EFLJ department for those dates/times or check our website at http://www.missouriwestern.edu/eflj/lg/flpe.html.  It is not necessary to register for the test or bring any materials to the test site.  The placement test is done by computer and will take 20-30 minutes.

If you successfully earn credit hours, the test administrator will complete the “Petition for Foreign Language Test-Out.”  Part I of the form must be completed and signed by the administrator of the test at that time.  Please note the following policies:  You have exactly one year from the date of the test in which to claim your credit. If you enroll in the course recommended by the placement test, you must claim the credit prior to completing the recommended course.

To claim your credit, present your Petition for Foreign Language Test-Out to Vicki Schneider in the English, Foreign Languages, and Journalism Department (Eder Hall, Room 222-B) along with your check for payment.

Please note that taking the placement test is free. If you are eligible for credit and choose to claim that credit, the cost is $75, regardless of how many credit hours you earn.

You may take the test as many times as you wish.  However, each attempt costs $75 when you claim the credit.  For example, if you take the test three times before your score is high enough for credit, your cost to claim those credit hours will then be $225 (3 attempts @ $75 each).

Ms. Schneider will process your payment and it will be credited to your MWSU account.  She will also send the information to the Admissions Office to be applied to your transcript.  The credit hours should appear on your transcript as CR for credit (no grade is indicated) in two to three weeks.  The original payment receipt, along with a copy of the Petition for Foreign Language Test-out, will be mailed to your home address for your records.

If you enroll in the course suggested by the placement test and complete that course with a grade of C or better, your test fee will be refunded in full.  Please see Vicki Schneider in the EFLJ department to initiate the refund.  You have 18 months from the date of your test in which to take the recommended course and request a refund.

Students whose high school transcripts show three or more years of French, German, or Spanish (with grades of C or better, and within three years of the semester in question) should attempt the placement exam because they will not receive credit should they enroll in the beginning French, Spanish, or German course (FRE/GER/SPA 102).
