Alternative Testing
If your documentation requests accommodations for alternative testing, you will first need to make contact with the Special Needs office. Alternative testing may include: extended time (normally 1 1/2 times the regular testing time; i.e. one hour of regular testing time would equal 1 1/2 hours for alternative testing), reader, scribing the answers, or use of a computer with spell check or grammar check for essay tests. If you choose to access alternative testing, then you and/or the professor(s) of your class(es) must arrange the testing schedule with the Testing Coordinator, Debbie Webb.
Other Testing
Within the parameters of the guidelines of each testing company, special testing accommodations are provided for disabled students. Certification of disability is usually required by the test company. Students who require special testing should contact the Testing Coordinator well in advance of the test date to allow time for the materials to be ordered.
Word Processing & Typing
The testing center also provides access to micro computer and WordPerfect software. The computer lab in the testing department is equipped also to accommodate wheelchairs.
For Teachers: Guidelines to facilitate the process for alternative testing
Instructors need to discuss with students appropriate times for taking tests before calling the Testing Center to make appointments. For example, if extended time is required by the student and the student has a class immediately following your class, taking the test during your class time may not be an option. Tests must be scheduled by the instructor at least three days ahead of test date.
Tests are kept in a locked vault in the testing coordinator's office. Student workers do not have access to this vault or any of the tests.
If a student does not come at the scheduled time for a test, the test will not to be administered unless you, the instructor, call the Testing Center directly with different instructions, 271-4285. The testing center only has two testing rooms available and proctors' schedules are often full.
Instructors need to have the tests at the Testing Department, Eder Hall, Room 203, a day in advance of the scheduled test date. If the test is not here at the scheduled time, the student will be told to contact you to set up another appointment. If the student requires a reader, please send two copies of the test. This enables the student to have one to follow while the reader reads from the other. Both copies of the test will be returned to you.
Instructors must make arrangements for the tests to be picked up no later than a day after the scheduled test time. Instructors or their designees may pick up the test, instructors may request students to return sealed tests, or instructors may request tests be returned in campus mail. Testing forms must be filled out and attached to every test sent to the Testing Center.
