Purchasing Equipment, Computer & Supplies

Basic Information
If you need to have information prior to making a purchase, please send an email to sloan@missouriwestern.edu and Kelly will try to respond within 24 hours.

Kelly Sloan will make the requisition for any computer, printer or computer accessory items. She needs to have the following information: Account code to charge the item to, description of the item you are requesting, and quantity.

Campus Standard Purchases
We have been purchasing Dell computers and Hewlett Packard printers for our campus.

Benefits
You are able to complete your own requisitions for department specific software and computer accessories. The benefits of utilizing Kelly to make requisitions are:

  • Knowledge of extra items that need to be ordered at the same time will save you time and effort. 
  • Already has established relationships with vendors to ensure the best price is obtained. 
  • If Information Technology Services orders the item they can assist in any arising questions with the product, install the item and can complete the return if needed. 
Purchasing Requirements
Any computer related item requisition/procurement card purchase over $250 would need to be approved by Kelly Sloan.

All requisitions that are under $2000 can go directly to Purchasing after appropriate approval. Any requisition totally between $2000 and $5000 will need to have 3 written bids accompanying the requisition prior to going to Purchasing. Any requisition over $5000 will need to have formal bids sent to Purchasing.

Internal Transfers
Kelly will complete internal transfer forms for any item in stock in the Information Technology department, such as zip disks, printer cables and paper

Software Site Licenses
Presently, we have a Microsoft Campus Agreement site license for Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Visual Studio and FrontPage. We also have a site license for McAfee Antivirus program . If you need other software programs such as WordPerfect, you will need to purchase it.

SPSS Software Program
The software program SPSS is handled through Kelly Sloan for staff and faculty members. You can email her at sloan@missouriwestern.edu with a brief description of you need and length of time needed. This will be evaluated and reviewed depending upon need and number  of available licenses. We have purchased 150 licenses.

New Computer Set Up and Service Problems
If you have a new computer delivered to your area and you need to know what to do next, send an email to help@missouriwestern.edu. They will set up your computer with the standard software. They will install Microsoft Office with FrontPage and McAfee Antivirus. If you have a computer problem that you need to have fixed you can also send an email to help@missouriwestern.edu. This is forwarded to two technicians and they will coordinate when they are able to complete the required service (SEE TECHNICIANS PAGE)

Personal Purchases
Student Personal Purchases

Purchasing a computer is a major investment, and we want to help you make a wise investment. We recommend middle- to higher-end technology for two reasons:

  1. To anticipate the use of resource-intensive applications, especially in the residence halls
  2. Because today's high-end technology may still be useful for these resource-intensive tasks by the time you are a junior or senior.

Ultimately, though, it's up to you as to whether you purchase computer technology than our recommendation. If you have concerns and questions, call Kelly at 816-271-4565 and she will assist you.

For students living in the residence halls, the recommendations for systems are:

  • Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows XP
  • At least 512MB memory
  • 386 Processor or above (Celeron or Pentium processors)
  • 10 base-T 10/100 ethernet card to access MWSU's network.  If your computer doesn't have a network card, you can purchase one at Office Max or Office Depot in St. Joseph. You will also need to have a RJ45 patch Ethernet cable. The length will depend on how close the computer will connect to the network box in your room. Usually 3-5 feet is plenty.

Students living off-campus will need a modem and dial-up service provider or access to broadband services, such as DSL or cable modems for connectivity to the network. MWSU does not provide modems for off-campus access. Internet access providers are available in the local phone directory under Internet Products & Services.

Students and faculty are able to purchase a Dell computer at a discount at http://www.dell.com/us/en/fss/default.htm or you can call into the Faculty/Student/Staff group and order over the phone by calling 1-888-987-3355. The discount is usually enough to pay for shipping. You can look on the consumer page (www.dell.com) also and you may have more discounts with some bundle pricing. Select the education link on the right, then Higher Education Students, Faculty and Staff personal purchases. On the next screen, select the Higher Education Faculty, Students and staff link and you can begin shopping.

LABS: Please note that Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access) software is our standard at MWSU and is available in all the labs. Microsoft Works is not available in the labs and not widely used on our campus. Each lab has specific software for the classes.
