What types of applied learning opportunities are available?

Every Business major is required to complete an Applied Learning experience developed to provide the students with hands-on training before graduation.  Internships, directed faculty research, or studying abroad through the Global Viewpoint class are offered in the department.

Why are applied learning experiences important to the program?

Applied learning experiences provide our students with the opportunity to learn about the business world firsthand, develop their business skills, and gain experience that employers seek when hiring recent college graduates. In their 2005 Job Outlook Handbook, the National Association of Colleges and Employers, report that employers place high value on experience gained through experience (includes internships, works experience, co-op experience).

What internship opportunities are available?

Students have served as accounting assistants, assistant managers in retail stores, assistant loan officers, salespersons, marketing analysts, human resources assistants, claims processors, customer service assistants and more.

Recent internship sites include Citizens Bank and Trust, American Family Insurance, Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica, Inc., Drury Inn, Hillyard, Inc., Nebraska Furniture Mart, Maurices, Federal Reserve Bank in Kansas City, and Gray Automotive Products Company.

Several courses offer students research opportunities where students work closely with faculty members.

Do students present research findings at conferences?

Yes. Students have presented papers at national and international conferences in Las Vegas, Nevada; Milan, Italy; and Ottawa, Canada. The student who presented in Ottawa was only one of nine students selected to present in an international competition.

Do business majors have study abroad opportunities?

Yes!  The Business Department offers students the opportunity to explore the business world and culture of a foreign country through their Global Viewpoint course, where a semester-long study of a country culminates in a two- to three-week visit there. Prior destinations included Germany, England, Finland, Sweden and Poland. Future trips  include Turkey, Spain, and Portugal.

How does the Business Department prepare students for careers in business?

Students earning Business degrees develop strong communication, critical thinking, and data analysis skills that help prepare them for demanding business careers. The Applied Learning requirement for all business majors prior to graduation provides a hands-on experience which adds to our graduates’ skill bank.

Additionally, students are assigned to a faculty advisor in their major business area (accounting, finance, management, or marketing) who monitor their academic progress toward graduation. The advisors also assist students with career development and planning issues.
