What is the Golden Griffon
Scholarship?
The
Golden Griffon Scholarship is Western's largest
and most prestigious scholarship valued at up to
$10,000 per year, renewable for four years.
Requirements for the Golden Griffon candidacy
include: applying to Western as a first-time,
degree-seeking student; ranking in the top 10% of
the high school class or an overall GPA of 3.5 for
all high school coursework (on a 4.0 scale); a
composite ACT score of 27 or above; and evidence
of involvement in extracurricular activities and
community service. Applicants are required to
submit two essays, and complete a personal
interview. Recipients must participate in the
Honors Program, live in the residence halls and
maintain a minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA for renewal.
The Golden Griffon Scholarship cannot be combined
with other Western scholarships except for the
Neighboring States Scholarship and Frontier
Scholarship.
How many Golden Griffon Scholarships are awarded?
This is not your typical large scholarship
where only five or ten scholarships are awarded.
In fact, each year the Golden Griffon Committee
may award up to 40 scholarships!
What type of students get awarded the Golden
Griffon?
Just because this is our top scholarship doesn't
mean that we are looking for the 40 applicants
with the highest ACT scores. The Golden Griffon
Committee is looking for well-rounded individuals
that have an outstanding academic record, good
written and oral communication skills, evidence of
involvement outside of the classroom (i.e.,
extracurricular activities, community service,
etc.) and the potential to be a leader on our
campus.
