While higher education has always been concerned with
developing students as scholars, recent work has initiated national
conversations on how students utilize their academic knowledge
to become more involved citizens (see Bringle, Games, & Malloy,
1999; Colby, Ehrlich, Beaumont, & Stephens, 2003; Kuh, Schuh, & Whitt,
1991).
The ADP was established to generate this type of national conversation,
specifically among institutions that are part of the American Association
of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) about institutions’ commitment
to civic engagement as a learning outcome for undergraduates.
Missouri Western is committed to developing students who understand
and are prepared to fulfill their social and civic responsibilities.
Students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of applied
learning and leadership initiatives that encourage them to take
an active and participatory role in our democracy.
